i downloaded esf from this site and i don't have exe file
and i don't see the game in steam

Can you write out the full path where you installed ESF to?

c > Program files > Steam > steamapps > accountname > half life 2 > esf...

Nope. ESF is not a Half Life 2 mod. It is a Half Life 1 mod.
Thats the reason why STEAM doesnt recognise it as installed.

Yea. But every couple of weeks Valve has some special offer on hand.
A few weeks ago HL1 was only 99 cents same just before the end of last year. Allmost every weekend they have some products at a discount so if you keep checking that you might see a HL1 discount.
Then again HL1 itself is only 10$ on STEAM. So its not that expensive to begin with.
Just make sure you are not buying second hand. Cause as you probably know. Once a game has been registered to a STEAM account the CD-key can not be used again.
